Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality in the UK and worldwide. It is estimated to cost the NHS over £800 million annually, with nearly 24,000 attributable deaths in 2010, making it the fourth biggest cause of years of life lost in the UK.
