Headache diagnosis in general practice: a patient-focused questionnaire

Prompt and accurate diagnosis of headache disorders, including migraine, in primary care is important to guide appropriate patient management. This article discusses a novel and easy-to-complete patient questionnaire intended to facilitate the diagnosis of primary headache disorders by primary care physicians.

Abstract Background: There is a need for accurate and timely diagnosis of primary headache disorders, including migraine, in primary care. However, better diagnostic support is needed for GPs. Objectives: We describe the development of a short, patient-directed questionnaire and supporting documents aimed at facilitating diagnosis of headache disorders in primary care. Methods: The questionnaire was developed over 18 months using the clinical experience of the authors, literature review and the International Classification of Headache Disorders 3rd edition (ICHD), for migraine, tension-type headache, cluster headache and medication-overuse headache.
