Pica in older people

Pica is the persistent eating, over a period of at least one month, of substances that are not food and do not provide nutritional value. It is rare in older patients and is usually associated with an injury, disability, mental health issue or dementia.

Pica is an eating disorder characterised by ingestion of non-food items and is mainly discovered in childhood and pregnancy. Its overall prevalence is still unknown and it is not usually well reported in the media. The stigma surrounding it may have a role to play in it going underreported, but other reasons remain to be seen. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) classifies pica as the habitual consumption of nonfood and non-nutritive substances for at least one year.
