New BGS president on supporting a patient group that’s rich in experience

Dr Jennifer Burns, new president of the British Geriatrics Society, talks about her plans to champion the interests of its members, and why caring for older people is so rewarding.

Consultant geriatrician Dr Jennifer Burns finds that there’s “a lot of joy and laughter” in looking after older people, even when that joy sometimes combines with sadness that a long life is coming to an end. “Every patient is an individual. You’re never bored. And it’s also a really positive experience working with a team of like-minded people,” says Dr Burns. For 25 years, she has enjoyed working as a consultant geriatrician at Glasgow Royal Infirmary, and hopes her passion for the specialty will be reflected in her new role as president of the British Geriatrics Society (BGS), whose goal
