Neurology: A Clinical Handbook
By Charles Clarke

It is always worth reading the preface of a book, as it often gives the reader (and prospective reader) an insight into the role, function and ethos of the book. This preface gives a huge insight into the author, who has worked as a general neurologist in both a district general hospital setting and was also attached to the famous National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery at Queen Square, London.
The author is also an editor of the distinguished Neurology: A Queen Square Textbook 2nd edition and this book is a handbook based on this larger textbook.
Neurology can for some be a tricky subject, so any book that helps to demystify the topic is always welcome. A good example of this is on Page 116, which has an excellent description of Parkinson’s disease. It is very well written, authoritative, useful, practical and most importantly easy to read.
A lot of the text is broken up with good use of bullet points, but with a surprisingly good volume of detail. Also impressively, there is a very good range of topics covered, some of which are not always commonly covered elsewhere.
A good example of this is Chapter 19 Toxins, Physical Insults, Nutritional and Metabolic Disorders, Unregulated Drugs. This is an interesting chapter and full of common and uncommon scenarios – even space travel is covered!
The book is well priced and could be useful for a number of people. It would be nice if there was an eBook and app included within the purchase price. Apart from that minor grumble, this is a useful clinically orientated book, well written and infused with lots of good advice and knowledge from an experienced neurologist. It deserves to do well.
