Health inequality is not a new concept but since the Covid-19 pandemic the Government, researchers, public health practitioners and policymakers have recognised that a crucial part of NHS recovery will include tackling long-neglected inequalities in health.
Covid-19 had a disproportionate effect on certain groups of people such as those living in areas of high deprivation, people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic communities (BAME), older adults and people with a learning disability. The pandemic also brought into sharp focus that people with existing poor health are already facing inequality through structural disadvantage or discrimination.
